Learn Indirectly What Families Know and Do

Home to School Information Sheets

Teachers can send sheets home to learn more about children’s daily lives and routines. The information gathered can then be connected directly to the curriculum, providing real-world and familiar examples to children. You will find several examples to use in your classroom in our Professional Materials section.

For example, families have the opportunities to share special dishes and recipes. The ingredients shared in the recipe can then be the fruits and vegetables explored during a unit on Plants We Eat.

Through asking about family holidays, a common concept across many was that of light. Decorative lights, candles and even daylight were mentioned which then can bring about an investigation into sources of light.

By learning about familiar fruits and vegetables eaten at home, a unit on the five senses can use these specific examples during a tasting experience.

Finding out about how families enjoy time together during various seasons can provide you with examples to use within a unit that are meaningful and culturally relevant. By inviting families to complete the sheets in their native language, a sense of community is built.
